2010 Cassidy's Bay Regatta Race Report

As boats arrived on Friday afternoon, spirits were high and it was clear that it was going to be a good weekend. Eighteen boats in total, from Canada, the USA, Great Britain and even Australia (via Long Island), made the trip to Howe Island for the 2010 Cassidy's Bay Invitational Regatta.


The first day started with light air; too light to leave the beach. But not to worry, there's lots to do at Cassidy's Bay. After a leisurely morning of swimming, relaxing, a little bouncy castle action, and some lunch, the fleet headed out in a slightly improved 5-6 knots.


We were able to get two races in on Day 1 before the breeze gave up. Yates/Curtis managed two bullets in the light and shifty conditions. Warburton/Fischer finished the day in second, and Gooderham/Hogan in third.


The long distance race was scheduled for Day 2 and we awoke to a 12-15knot north-east wind. Lemieux/Lockett were able to take the win after 5h 19m of racing. See yesterday's post for more details.

On Day 3 we were greeted with the typical south-west breeze. Three races were run and Gooderham/Hogan gave the fleet a lesson in sailing in the breeze, taking all three bullets. Yates/Curtis took three seconds, Lemieux/Lockett two thirds, and Pavey/Wickwire the final third place. Despite their strong showing on day 3, Gooderham/Hogan were not able to take the regatta from Yates/Curtis. Final standing after one drop:

2010 CBI Long-Distance Race

This year's Cassidy's Bay Long-Distance Race was EPIC! In an east wind, not the prevailing conditions this time of year, we went counter-clockwise around Howe Island. The goal is to always pass through the Bateau Channel under spinnaker as it gets very narrow. In 2009 the first boat crossed the finish after 3hr 15min. This year it was 5hr 19min, with the last boat rolling in after 7hrs! The 23 NM felt particularly long in the dying wind.

The race was started on time off the dock in Cassidy's Bay. With the east wind it was a downwind start in light and puffy conditions. Puckey/Peterson took an early lead after an excellent start.

Rounding to leeward of Hickey's Point and heading upwind in Middle Channel, the fleet was met with a beautiful 12-15 knots which lasted nearly half the beat through Middle Channel before slowly easing to 5-8 knots.

The fleet came back together at the eastern end of Howe Island, rounding Aubrey Island to port. First around was Yates/Curtis, followed closely by Puckey/Peterson. Third round was McGhan/Davidge, and fourth was Lemieux/Lockett. Battling for 5th round Aubrey was a group of 6 boats including last years winners Gooderham/Hogan.

The downwind through Bateau Channel was long and provided much opportunity for passing. The wind all but died and the fleet spent its time looking backwards for small puffs to ride. Passing Trident Yacht Club, Yates/Curtis had managed about a 1nm lead, with 6 boats battling for second place.

Coming through the Bateau Channel, Lemieux/Lockett had managed to squeak ahead of Yates/Curtis, rounding the Cassidy's Shoal a few boats lengths ahead. Settling more quickly into the final beat to the finish, Yates/Curtis managed to regain the lead. However it wasn't to last as Lemieux/Lockett caught a final puff a couple hundred yards from the finish, pulling ahead and winning the 2010 Cassidy's Bay Invitational Regatta Long Distance Race.

Everything is Ready to Go

It's the Thursday before the 2nd Annual Cassidy's Bay Regatta, and I think we're almost ready. All the food has arrived, 2 of the 3 kegs are here, the race committee is all set, and it looks like we'll have 19 boats.

7 Weeks to Cassidy's Bay!

Planning for the 2010 Cassidy's Bay Invitational Regatta is going well. It's looking like it will be another well attended regatta.

One change from last year, we'll be supplying food for all the meals (3 breakfast, 3 lunch, and 3 dinner). Thanks to Macgregor's Meat & Seafood for supplying all the meat. Meal tickets will be $150 per adult. Kids not sailing will eat for free. Details are in the registration form.
